This year, we have had the privilege of working on some truly special turbochargers, and this one is no exception. It is a genuine piece of motorsport history: a KKK Turbolader K27 turbocharger from this 1982 Audi Quattro A1 Group B works car, once piloted by rallying royalty Hannu Mikkola with co-driver Arne Hertz.
The Audi Quattro transformed both rallying and road cars. Launched in 1980, it brought four-wheel drive into the mainstream and demonstrated that a turbocharged five-cylinder engine paired with quattro all-wheel drive could conquer the world’s toughest rally stages. This specific chassis was built in early 1982 and debuted in the Monte Carlo and Swedish Rallies. While Mikkola finished second in Monte Carlo, it marked just the start of the car’s remarkable career.
Following its works days, the Quattro became a training car and later raced in Finland under the legendary ex-SAAB driver Antero Laine. Laine used it to claim multiple victories in the Finnish Rally Championship and the Arctic Rally, further cementing its legacy. Over the years, the car passed through several hands, competing in both rallies and ice races. In 1991, it was acquired by Anders Carlsson, renowned Audi collector from Sweden, and placed on museum display.
