This month, AET was entrusted with the restoration of a K26 BorgWarner KKK Turbolader turbocharger from a 1980 Porsche 924 Carrera GT.
A homologation special developed to satisfy Group 4 racing regulations, the 924 Carrera GT bridged the gap between road and competition car. Powered by a 2 ltr turbocharged and intercooled inline-four engine, it produced 210 bhp and 203 lb-ft of torque, thanks to a revised top-mounted intercooler, higher compression, and electronic ignition.
Its lightweight body, distinctive fibreglass arches and wide track set it apart visually and dynamically to the other Porsche models available at the time. Combined with lowered suspension and ventilated brakes, the Carrera GT delivered a level of balance and precision that made it highly competitive on the circuit.
With just 400 examples built, the model has become an important piece of Porsche’s motorsport history. Restoring its original K26 turbocharger required careful inspection and reconditioning to exact specification, maintaining period accuracy while applying AET’s modern methods to the machining and build process.
For over 50 years, and under ISO 9001:2015 accreditation, AET has supported clients across the motorsport, automotive, marine, industrial, and power generation sectors, providing bespoke turbocharger engineering and restoration services of the highest quality.
