Historic Porsche 934/5 – K27 BorgWarner Turbocharger Upgrade

In 2025, AET completed a K27 turbocharger upgrade for a specialist customer’s Porsche 934/5, one of the most distinctive and celebrated competition cars from Porsche’s Group 4 and Group 5 racing era.

Introduced in 1977, the Porsche 934/5 was a remarkable hybrid of two racing icons. It combined the chassis and 3.0L turbocharged engine of the 934 with the wider wheels, tyres, and rear wing of the 935. Originally built for IMSA’s Group 4 class, the 934/5 went on to dominate the SCCA Trans-Am Series, winning six of the eight races it entered. Although later stripped of its title following a competitor protest, its performance firmly established the 934/5 as one of Porsche’s most formidable race cars.

With only ten examples ever produced, the 934/5 remains an exceptionally rare and highly regarded piece of motorsport history. Restoring and upgrading the turbochargers and wastegates demanded both engineering precision and a deep respect for the heritage of the car.

The turbocharger upgrade was completed with that heritage in mind – combining modern materials and processes with period-correct engineering principles to enhance performance and reliability while preserving authenticity.
